Trinkets are items that provide unique bonuses to your (almost) heroes. They can be equipped to any character and swapped between them. They can be upgraded by completing the associated quest and using scraps.
Trinkets are unlocked at stage 193 in Adventure Mode. The number of trinkets that you can keep at any given time is limited by the trinket slots. You unlock your first trinket slots at stage 192 in Adventure mode.

There are three broad groups of trinket bonuses. A trinket can have up to 3 different bonuses (one for each category*).
These effects apply when the hero is in the active party (even if they are dead).
